Topic: Hysterectomy

My next plan of action is to have a full hysterectomy to eliminate the risk of getting ovarian cancer due to BRCA1. I would love to hear from anyone who has had this done and which procedure you had. I am thinking of having it done laprascoptically. Public v Private? What is everyones experiences through the public system? I have seen Mr Laney at the Oxford Clinic and am very confident with him. What other surgeons are recommended? Lots of questions but would appreciate other opinions. Thanks

Re: Hysterectomy

Hi Amanda
I had laparoscopic removal of both overies and fallopian tubes last November to elimate my risks of getting ovarian cancer due to BRCA1.  I went through the public system and were totally pleased with how quickly I got through (only had to wait 2 months) and also my specialist Peter Sykes was great and very caring.  The surgery was day only surgery and I had to take things quietly for a couple of weeks.  The only thing I wish I had taken more seriously from my specialist was the early onset of menopause.  My specialist was telling me but I weren't listening.  Unfortunately I had a rough time with that, but everyone is different.  I had to end up going on HRT.

Re: Hysterectomy

Hi, I too had a hysterectomy last November (overies, fallopian tubes and uterus). I chose to have an incision and had to take things easy for 4-5 weeks. No problems post-op....already in menopause due to chemo/herceptin treatment for breast cancer. Mine was done in the public system here in Nelson, and all went very well. I wonder if your surgeon is the Mr Laney who delivered my son 24 years ago in Chch..if so, he was really great! Good luck.

Re: Hysterectomy

Hi, I had laparoscopic removal of both overies and fallopian tubes in January. I asked to have a hysterectomy at the same time but was told it was not "clinically indicated" and that it could not be done laprascopically. My surgery and recovery went very well. All the best to you.

Re: Hysterectomy

Hi Amanda

I wish I'd had the full 9 yards now, especially after going to the FORCE conference in June. One of the speakers was a leading HRT & cancer doc whose view was pretty cut and dried - if you're done with your uterus, get rid of it, because you're safer HRT-wise without it. . I wrote a blog post about it here: http://gettingit.typepad.com/force2010/ if you want to read about the session. She was really interesting - especially around the whole HRT thing. I came home and immediately swapped from oral estrogen to patches.
